Pieces of Air
I've really grown to love the dynamics in this man's environmental recordings. Mr. Tsunoda's excerpts of choice are so rich, so full of sumptuousness... he clearly knows what he's looking for, and he gets it. He clearly has a penchant for recording things as heard through pipes, tubes, and long cylindrical objects in general -- and the sound is subtle and captivating. That, and he also shows he has a knack for capturing nature in all of its grandeur. Yet the pinacle of this album (in my humble opinion) is its last track, a beautiful recording of unsyncronized Islamic noontime calls to prayer. As man who's never left the North American continent, I've never had a chance to experience it for myself. But I find it very powerful and very moving; I'm thrilled to have been able to hear it vicariously. I've seen a plastic namecard for the artist in my local store(s) -- a good sign -- so hopefully there's plenty of copies of his material to fill it.
